Learn how to use a character ice pack to keep your lunch cool and fresh. Simple steps for prepping, placing, and cleaning your reusable ice pack.
Quick answer
To keep your lunch cool, freeze the character ice pack flat overnight, place it on top of the food in your lunchbox, and store the pack in the freezer between uses.
Why size and shape matter for your lunchbox
A character ice pack is compact at 4.3" x 6.5" x 0.7", which fits neatly inside standard lunch containers or coolers. Its flat shape maximizes contact with food and drink, helping everything stay chilled for hours without taking up too much space.
One common mistake to avoid
Do not place the ice pack at the bottom of a soft lunch bag. Cold air sinks, so the ice pack works best on top, where it creates a cold blanket over the food. Putting it underneath lets the cold settle away from the items you want to keep cool.
How to use your character ice pack
- Freeze the pack flat: Place the ice pack flat in your freezer overnight. Laying it flat ensures even freezing and prevents lumps that reduce cooling efficiency. Check that the pack is fully solid before packing your lunch.
- Position it on top of the food: After packing your lunch, place the frozen ice pack on top of the food and drink containers. This lets cold air settle downward, keeping everything cool. If the lunch bag has multiple compartments, put the ice pack in the main compartment with the most perishable items.
- Store the pack properly after use: When you get home, rinse the ice pack with mild soap and water, dry it, and return it to the freezer. Never store it at room temperature, as moisture can promote mold. Wipe the pack before freezing to keep it clean and ready for the next use.
